EU automotive and telecoms sectors shore up connected and automated driving strategy
Frankfurt, 15 September 2017 – As the global race for connected and automated driving gains pace, the European Automotive Telecom Alliance (EATA) met today with the European Commission at the Frankfurt Motor Show to announce the latest developments. Representatives from EATA presented the status of the dialogue between the car and telecoms industries with Günther Oettinger, European Commissioner for Budget, and with the newly-appointed European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel.

ECTA welcomes BEREC position on draft new Code
ECTA today reiterates that it supports the European Commission’s proposal to insert an objective of access to, and take-up of, very high capacity data connectivity in the draft European Electronic Communications Code, alongside the established policy objectives, and particularly the promotion of competition. At the same time, ECTA stresses that it also shares several of the concerns expressed by BEREC, the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications, in a set of position papers on the draft Code (available here).

Competition: the missing element of the European Parliament’s draft report on the proposed European Electronic Communications Code
Brussels, 22 March 2017: Today, the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) discussed the draft report of MEP Pilar Del Castillo Vera (European People’s Party), on the Proposal for a Directive establishing the European Electronic Communications Code (EECC).
ECTA has identified positive elements, such as:
- The removal of a mandatory three-year deployment forecast for network operators, which would have created a huge administrative burden in particular for smaller operators i;
- A proposed new right for network operators to access physical infrastructure controlled by public authorities (public buildings, street furniture, such as light poles, street signs, traffic lights, billboards, bus, tramway stops, metro stations)ii .

Connected and automated driving EATA presents deployment roadmap, submits proposal for EU-wide project

The European Automotive Telecom Alliance (EATA) today presented the next steps to make connected and automated driving a reality. During a roundtable discussion chaired by European Commission Vice-President Andrus Ansip and in the presence of Commissioner Günther H. Oettinger, the telecoms and automotive industries reported the latest technology developments and the corresponding societal and economic benefits for European citizens.

ECTA welcomes Luc Hindryckx as its new Executive Director
Brussels, 27 September 2016: With more than 20 years of experience in Business Development and Operations Leadership Experience as well as European Regulatory and Public Affairs, Luc Hindryckx has now been appointed ECTA new Executive Director.
In his professional career Luc Hindryckx also chaired the Council of the Belgian Institute for Postal services and Telecommunications (BIPT), served on multiple boards including BEREC, ERGP and ENISA and worked for several telecommunications operators.

37 leading companies join forces in European Automotive-Telecom Alliance to launch connected and automated driving project
Paris, Brussels, 30 September 2016 – At a Round Table on Connected and Automated Driving initiated and chaired by Günther H. Oettinger, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, the automotive and telecom industries have today formally announced the creation of Europe’s first Automotive-Telecom Alliance. The Alliance includes six leading sectorial associations, as well as 37 companies, including telecom operators, vendors, automobile manufacturers and suppliers for both cars and trucks.

Brussels, 14 September 2016: Today the European Commission kick-started the review of the telecoms regulatory framework by publishing its legislative proposal for a directive establishing the new European Electronic Communications Code. It consolidates and amends the existing EU Directives on electronic communications (the telecoms framework).

ECTA’s statement on decision by the European Commission on vectoring in Germany
Brussels, 20 July 2016. Yesterday, the European Commission announced that it will not open an in-depth investigation into the German telecoms regulator Bundesnetzagentur (BNetzA)’s revised plan to grant exclusivity on upgrades of the copper network with vectoring technology.
