ECTA Board elects Gijs Phoelich as new ECTA Chair
Brussels, 15 January 2016: The ECTA Board elected Gijs Phoelich, General Counsel & Company Secretary of Eurofiber as new Chairman and Martin Witt, CEO of 1&1 and President of VATM as Vice-Chairman.
"We have a year full of challenges and opportunities ahead of us. We collectively need to seize the opportunity to create a vibrantly competitive Digital Single Market that delivers first and foremost to end-users. The beauty of vibrant competition is that it is a win-win for all: the entire sector, investors as well as end-users benefit from an effectively competitive market.” stated Gijs Phoelich, ECTA’s new Chairman.
"We also need to meet the challenges ahead of us. Business as usual is not an option when the risk of re-monopolisation by former telecoms monopolies is so serious and imminent.” added Martin Witt, the newly elected Vice-Chairman of ECTA. "It is our responsibility to ensure that Europe does not slide back on competition. This is the most important task of the revision of the EU’s telecoms rules.”
Healthy competition is the engine of the economy. We need European regulation to ensure effective competition in broadband in order to outcompete the economic slowdown. As bottlenecks still persist in the last mile of the fixed broadband network strong and consistent regulation is needed to inject competition and guarantee choice, innovation and affordability for end-users. Regulation also plays a very important role enabling challenger operators to invest in next generation broadband networks.
This year will be critical and we should not miss the opportunity to build a fully Connected Europe ensuring that all end-users, citizens and businesses can reap its benefits by putting a stronger focus on enabling all players to invest and compete.
